In 1969 Dale Porter
began a small woodworking business cutting wood components
for Sea-Ray Boats. During the recession in the 1970’s the
boat industry suffered and a change needed to be made in
order to survive. Dale switched to making cabinets. His
cabinet business thrived along with the rapid growth of the
valley in the 1980’s. Custom Oak face frame cabinets were
his specialty and many homes in the valley still have
cabinets from D. Porter and Company Cabinetmakers.
In the 1990’s custom
homebuilders demanded more from cabinetmakers and D. Porter
and Company made the change to build custom “frameless”
cabinetry. This type of construction was more precise and
produced a “high-end” cabinet. Her was another example
where changes were made to adapt to the changing market in
In 1999 Dale’s
son-in-law Cord joined the company and began to learn the
trade that Dale had mastered over the previous 30 years.
Cord took over running the business in 2001.
moved into retirement, Cord started his own shop in 2003 and
Woodsmith Cabinetry was born. Woodsmith focused on high-end
custom cabinets for homes usually with values at $1 million
or more. The company grew fast and expanded up to 12
employees in 2006. As many know, the “bubble” burst in 2007
and construction slowed (some say it even stopped). Another
change was in order. A change to modular cabinets. Cord
had often combined “modular” or “pre-made” cabinets with
custom projects in order to help customers stay within
certain budgets. He had seen how pre-sized cabinets had
come from being ugly “box” cabinets to some very nice
cabinetry with options and features that rivaled many custom
banks limited loaning money and custom home projects coming
to a standstill, Cord saw the quick rise in the “fix and
flip” market. Many of the custom homebuilders had become
“house flippers” or “rehab experts” of distressed
properties. With these projects, one thing mattered most….
The PRICE! With this in mind, Cord set out on finding a
supplier who could build him a good quality cabinet at a
very low price. He decided to keep margins low and do as
much volume as possible. (the Wal-mart philosophy).
Woodsmith Cabinetry became Discount Cabinetry to better
reflect the change in products and pricing. The great
“custom” service of design and attention to detail is still
there. Customers are still treated as if they have a $1
million dollar home, but now they don’t have to pay for
million dollar cabinets. As a matter of fact, Cord figured
out how to offer all-wood cabinets for a 10’ x 10’ L-shaped
kitchen for only $999. (9 boxes total with delivery and
installation not included)
